Insistencias Justificadas

Unexcused Absences

Absences may be considered unexcused for reasons including, but not limited to:

• Oversleeping or missing the bus
• Family vacations or trips taken during scheduled school days without prior administrative approval
• Personal errands or appointments that could reasonably be scheduled outside of school hours
• Babysitting, caring for family members, or other household responsibilities
• Leaving school without permission or skipping class
• Absences for which the school does not receive parent/guardian notification or documentation

Schools will address unexcused absences through a series of parent/guardian contacts by teachers, social workers/counselors, and school administrators. The aim of these contacts will be to firmly establish solid attendance habits for the student. Unexcused absences are, however, the responsibility of parents/guardians, who are subject to penalties under state and local truancy laws.

Absentismo escolar 

Student attendance is critical to the learning process. Unreported absences are unexcused and considered truancy. Chronically truant is any student absent without valid cause for 10 percent of the previous 180 regular attendance days, and chronic truancy is reported to the Regional Office of Education.

Inasistencias por Razones de Salud Mental 

District 2 is committed to partnering with families to address students’ needs and connect them with appropriate support and resources when concerns arise. Illinois School Code considers the mental and/or behavioral health of a student to be a valid cause for absence from school. These days are intended to support students experiencing mental or behavioral health concerns and should not be used as vacation or recreational days.

Therefore, parents/guardians may keep a student from school for up to five mental health absences with no need to provide a medical note for mental health needs. If reported to the school as mental health absences, they will be excused, and the student will be able to make up missed schoolwork.

Mental health absences can indicate a student needs additional support. If a student takes two or more mental health days during the school year, the school will contact their parents/guardians to conduct an emotional wellness check and determine if the student requires additional mental health support at school.

Elementary School Tardiness

Elementary students arriving after 8:40 a.m. are considered tardy. Students should report to the main office with a parent/guardian to receive a pass to class. Unexplained tardiness is considered unexcused.

 

Middle School Tardiness

Students may enter the school building beginning at 7:30 a.m. Classes begin promptly at 7:50 a.m.

Any student who arrives after 7:50 a.m. is considered tardy and must report to the main office to obtain a pass before going to class.

A parent/guardian is expected to notify the school and provide the reason for the student's tardiness. Tardies without parent/guardian notification will be considered unexcused.

Students are permitted up to five (5) tardies each trimester. Tardy counts reset at the beginning of each trimester.

Beginning with the 6th tardy, and for each additional tardy during the same trimester, the student will:

• Receive an office referral.
• Be assigned an after-school reflection to make up the instructional time missed.
